Surfing is perhaps our most popular activity here at Costa Nica. It hasn’t taken long for the word to get around about the world class waves just outsider our door. Just in the past three years Nicaragua’s surf was featured by Surfer, Surfing, Transworld Surf, Surfer’s Journal, and the New York Times — and all of these articles have focused on the Tola coast, our 30 mile stretch of surfing paradise. We do have world class waves indeed, and we are committed to getting our clients to where the action is. Most of the quality surf spots along the Nicaraguan coasts, especially the Tola section, are privately owned with no overland access. The good news is that we have boats to get you to the waves wherever they are breaking, and we are much closer to the main breaks than the boats coming from San Juan del Sur or Astillero. And don’t forget that we have a wind condition advantage unique to anywhere in Central America: the NE trade winds blow straight across the Nicaraguan depression virtually unblocked by high mountains through the Tola region, giving us consistent offshore winds most days of the year. The spots we most often surf are: · The River mouth: best beach break in Nicaragua, hollow A-frame barrels, sand bottom. Think: Puerto Escondido meets Blacks. Fires from shoulder high to double overhead. World class wave. Very photogenic. · The Reef: Outside reef, breaks both ways, workable throughout, holds size when the beach break closes out. · The Point: Left point break with a big workable outside section, and a fast, grinding inside shelf. Recently featured on surf magazine cover. · Amarillo & Gigante: small beach breaks where we go for beginner surf classes. Not for experienced surfers. · Maderas/Playones (Maderas Monkey Shack only): fun hot dog wave, rights and lefts. Occasional left point too. There are many other places that we surf as well (i.e. Popoyo, Santana, Playgrounds, etc.), but there is rarely a need to go further when these epic and varied spots are within a 10-minute boat ride away from Gigante, and are almost always firing during the April-October “high surf season,” which corresponds roughly to the rainy season. Great waves can be had throughout the year, but are best during the rainy season. The dry season (Nov-Apr) brings smaller waves on average, but very consistent all-day offshore winds. No surfing experience? No Problem. We offer classes based from our local beach breaks.
